Dr. Seuss's Birthday

March 2nd marks the anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.  While it may seem trivial to celebrate an author of children’s books, it is hard to imagine what life would be like without the influence of The Cat in the Hat or Green Eggs and Ham.

Now that you are older I can imagine you may have lost an appreciation for the genius of Dr. Seuss and his work.  But as you watch the number of first graders and kindergarteners walking around looking like Thing 1 and Thing 2, it is difficult to deny the cultural and educational impact his work has had on society.

In addition to celebrating his birthday, this year they are releasing a movie “The Lorax”.  While it seems like a simple, enjoyable children’s story, it is also a political and social statement by Dr. Seuss concerning the over industrialization of our world and the fear of losing our natural resources.  Dr. Seuss often used his stories to not only entertain and engage children in reading, but provide insight into the world for the parents reading the books.  One of the most gifted books at high school graduation is “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”  It’s not so subtle message about how to live your life, through the good times and the bad is extremely relevant to people entering into new phases of their lives.

Did you read or were you read Dr. Seuss stories when you were a child?  If so, what is your favorite and why?  What do you think about the younger kids at school celebrating his birthday?

  1. Sophia- I loved Dr. Seuss's books when I was a kid! They were read to me, and then I learned how to read with them. My favorite is One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. I liked that one because it had really good pictures and the rhyming was really fun and rhythmic. I also memorized it so I could pretend that I could read really well! I think it's great that kids are celebrating his birthday. Dr. Seuss was a man who greatly impacts kids lives to this day. He teaches them morals through his books, and also how to have an imagination. He teaches kids to think outside the box, but in a learning way.

  2. Madison- I also loved Dr. Seuss's books when I was little! I don't remember the name of my favorite one but it had Go in the title somewhere. Another of my favorites, like Sophia, was One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. They were all so imaginative and creative! Green Eggs and Ham was another really good one! They were all really good at keeping my attention on the book. The books taught me at a young age that being different isn't bad. I thinks it's great that the kids celebrated his birthday! He has made a big impact on all kids who read his books, and it was cute seeing some of them wearing the hats around the school!

  4. Halle- I read Dr. Seuss books all the time! They were some of my favorite books as a kid. There was something about them that made them so enjoyable. Maybe because they were silly and seemed to make no sense. One of my favorites was Green Eggs and Ham or One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue fish. They both were silly and fun to read. Also when they rhymed I always thought it was funny. I think it's great that the younger kids celebrate his birthday. Dr. Seuss was a man with a ton of imagination and never gave up. Behind all the fun rhymes and nonsense of his books are true meaning that you might not understand until you're older. I agree with Sophia when she said he teaches kids to learn outside the box, and to have fun with life but in a fun and entertaining way.

  7. Angie- I read Dr. Seuss all the time when I was little. My favorite story was Green Eggs and Ham. I read that book every single day and never got sick of it. I even had a computer game of the book! I also loved The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. I think it's a good thing that kids are celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday today. Honestly I thought that since kids have been trying to act older and have been walking around with smart phones lately, kids forgot about Dr. Seuss. The Lorax looks like a cute movie though! I'm glad that Dr. Seuss is still recognized.
