Women's History Month

March has been designated as Women’s History Month.  The Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Archives and Records Administration, the National Park Service and other government agencies have partnered in paying tribute to the past and present women who have done so much to shape and progress our world.

This year’s theme is “Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment”.  As we have talked in class, education is the key to all future success.  Whether it is developing a nation, building a community or empowering a group of people, with education anything is possible.  Without education life is not only difficult, but obstacles can be immoveable.  Education is the key to freedom from whatever holds you back.  This insight was not always so obvious.

While women have always made significant contributions to our country, it is not surprising to me that as more women are entering and completing college that we are seeing more and more women in high profile positions.  This is the first generation with more women enrolled in college than men.  This is truly incredible when you consider social bias against higher education for women was dominant until the 1970’s.  Up through the 1970’s college majors and degrees were often limited to your gender, whether that be through actual college requirements or societal pressure.   Today, women are afforded the same opportunities as men.

Much of the progress can be attributed to Title IX legislation.  Title IX prohibits gender discrimination by any institute receiving federal funds.  Title IX provides equal access to education, facilities, and scholarships to women.  In addition to academics, women’s participation in athletics has increase by 900% in high school and 450% in collegiate activities.  The impact has been incredible.

What women stand out to you as making significant contributions to our country and why?  What do you think of Title IX and its impact?  In your lifetime, what “firsts” do you think you will see from women?

  1. Oh baby, OH BABY, man i need to soak in this moment right now! (1 minute of silence) OK, lets talk about women! The woman that stands out for me is ruby bridges and how she stood up for her education even though ever white person believed that all the black people don't deserve to have the right of education. I think it is fair for the women to have the right to go to school and get that education as much as men do, and i think without women this world would be a disaster.(obviously) I honestly dont know what women will be the firsts.

  2. Sophia- Rosa Parks really stands out to me. She significantly helped changed the world--for the better. She started the equal rights movement between whites and blacks, and I really respect her for that. I think title IX is a great thing and I'm glad that it has encouraged people to go to college. In my lifetime, I think I will see the first woman president. I'm pretty excited! That will be a big deal in history. I'm sure.

  3. Luke- There are two figures that stick out to me in the most profound way. Those people would be Rosa Parks and Rudy Bridges. Rosa Parks has the courage from the lion in the Wizard of Oz and Rudy Bridges stuck up for her education. i would never be able to do what these women achieved. I just dont have the guts to do that type of stuff. Some other women that inspire me are Bar Refaeli and Kate Upton. They are swim suit models. They make a big difference in my life.

  4. Abby- I think one of the most inspirational women to live was Mother Teresa. She helped so many in America and around the world. Mother Teresa cared for the poor, sick, and dying. She risked her life to save others. I think title IX is a great thing. It is great that it has encouraged women to go to college and participate in athletics. I think in my life time there will be the first woman president. That will be very interesting because instead of having a first lady we will have a first man!

  5. Phillip- Susan B. Anthony stands out to me, because of her all of America is being represented when voting and such. I think that Title IX was a really good thing. Before it, women could not play the same sports as men. I believe that sometime later in my lifetime, a woman will become president against all odds.

  6. Kendall- Ruby Bridges really stuck out to me for being a woman who contributed to our country in a positive way. She showed that all races should be able to be educated no matter what. She was an inspiration. I think that IX is awesome. It makes women want to go to school and be able to be educated. I think that firsts for women could probably be the first female president. I dont see why men are any better than women to be president. They are both equal.

  7. Madison- Susan B. Anthony and Harriet Tubman stand out to me. Susan B. Anthony helped with equal rights for both men and women. Harriet Tubman lead a lot of slaves to freedom in the Underground Railroad. I think that the Title IX is awesome because it gives women an equal chance to do well in sports and receive big scholarships. I think that a major first for women will be a female president. It would be a nice change, and it will possibly provide a different perspective for the government.

  8. Halle- I agree with a lot of people when they say Rosa Parks made a big contribution to our country. She was an inspiration to a lot of people. But i also think that Abigail Adams did some important things too. She was involved in politics and kept John Adams in line. I think Title IX is very important. There is no reason why women shouldn't have the same rights as men. Women do lots of important things just like men, so why should we be treated differently? I would like to see a great woman president. We never have had one before and i think it could make a huge impact on our country. Women are good at keeping track of families and jobs and work and bills so they must be good at running a country!

  11. gabby- i think that there are many great women who have influenced our country. i think that rosa parks was very influential, she refused to give up her seat which caused such a huge reaction. tile IX is super awesome because it let women do anything that a man could. it opened all sorts of opportunities for women to do things like sports and academics. i agree with marya that there we will probably see a women president in our lifetime.

  12. Atticus-There are many influential women in the history of this country but there is one woman that really sticks out to me and her name is Rosa Parks. Im shure many women were verry happy to have the IX title and I think that it was rightly given to them. Im shure that people would love to see lots of firsts for women in their lifetime but I think that the most improtand one that would stick out to people would be, probaly, if or rather when a woman president is inagurated. There could be many others but that is probaly the most prominant.

  13. RYAN= PROBABLY THERE ARE COUPLE BECAUSE THERE IS ROSA PARKS AND THEN THERE IS ALSO AMELIA EIRNHEART WHO FLEW ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. i THINK THE TITLE IX IS COOL BECAUSE WHAT WOULD OUR SPORTS BE LIKE IF WE DIDN'T HAVE WOMEN AND ALSO OUR SCHOOLS WHAT WOULD THEY BE LIKE.HAVING WOMEN HAS SAVED MAN KIND BECAUSE THEY ARE SO SMART. PROBABLY THE ONE THING IS A WOMAN BECOMING PRESIDENT BECAUSE THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED AND I'M SURE IT WILL SOME DAY

  14. Ally- There are many women who have made significant contributions to our country, but the women who stand out the most would be Rosa Parks or Ruby Bridges. They both made a big difference and are a big inspiration to many people. I think Title IX is very important. Women should not be treated any differently then men because women do many many important things just like men. I think one day we will have a female president!

  15. JACK- I THINK THAT THE BIGGEST WOMAN THAT HELPED OUT WITH WOMEN'S RIGHTS WOULD E ROSA PARKS. SHE NOT ONLY STOOD UP FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS BUT ALSO AFRICAN AMERICAN RIGHTS. I THINK THAT SHE WAS A PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF A TRUE AMERICAN.

  16. josu- i think the woman that stands out in history is Rosa parks. first of all she lived in a time were she was discriminated by the color of her skin so she didn't care that she was a woman. She had two reasons for people not taking her seriously and she made a point that no other man or woman could have made. I think title IX is very important because people shouldn't be treated different depending on their gender or race. Now girls are allowed to be on boys sports teams even wrestling. I think we will live to see the first female president.

  17. Cooper- I think the woman that stands out most is Rosa Parks because she had to fight against all odds that would go against her. Title IX is important because it created equality but it puts a strain on the athletic department budget because they don't bring in any revenue and they get equal amount of scholarships. Woman have more opportunity to excel in life.

  18. Zach-Rosa Parks is probaly the most famous woman who stood up for her rights. She stood up in a time that was was hard for african american adn women; which she was both. But even not knowinly she stood uo for women rights as well. I think that the Title IX is somthing that finally balances the scale. It makes power equally distrbuted among teh genders. It shows that humanity might finally move on as a species.

  19. Angie- I think Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks stand out the most to me. They've always inspired me. They taught me that anyone is capable of making a change and to always have courage. They both made such a huge impact on our community and society. I'm very interested in Title IX. I think its a good thing. People haven't always been discriminated by race, but also by gender. Women are always underestimated! I think its time something like this came along. I really want to have a female president! When I was younger, I wanted to be the first female president of the U.S. Oh how things have really changed....

  20. Cristna- i think rosa parks and mother teresa. both of these woman belive in somthing that they belived in and did what they did and its great! both of these woman taught me that stick up for what you belive in and do whatever you are called for by god. both of them made a great impact on teh world and usa. title IX is pretty interseting. poeple shouldnt be treated differntly because of there gender or race. they should be excepted int o the world becsause they are human also! in my lifetime, i am hoping to see the first woman president! i think that a huge thing in our country for a lady to run teh country!!!!

  22. Danielle- ruby bridges stands out to me the most. The way she went to the white school and didn't care what people thought of her, she just prayed for them. Would you do that? Also mother teresa she is just a kind woman who wanted to help people and she did what she believed in. Title IX is very interesting to me. All people are equal and shouldn't be treated differently. In my lifetime, i hope to see the first woman president!!!

  23. Isabelle- there are alot of women that have made great impacts on our country. Rosa parks, ruby bridges,Optah Winfrey, and even all of the president's wives. Rosa stood up for herself on the bus, ruby showed how much she cared about education, Oprah has done alot of charity work and has given alot of money. The wives show great work by sticking up for our country and helping their husbands protect the country. Title IX has given many opportunities to women and now some of the best athletes are women. I think someday we will see a first lady president.

  24. Nerea- I think ruby bridges stood out the most to me at least because she was so young standing up to all the whites. She had to fight to go to an all black school which now in society i never think twice if i see a black persons its just a normal thing now. ALso there are soo many talented and wonderful women athlest and have made it far with sports. One day i would like to see a women in the posittion of presidentcy. changing it up is sometimes good.

  25. Ann- i think the women of world war one made a very big impact during the war.Almost all of the men were off fighting for our country. They kept the country together by working the jobs men would have done, and they made huge sacrifices. Title IX made big difference in womans rights. I believe i will see the first woman president in my lifetime.

  26. Marcos- I think Mother Teresa because, she cared more for the poor, people who had diseases, and people who were in major disasters. She basically didn't care if she got a illness. She cared about helping people. The title IX was very important because women now has the rights to get the same education as men. Get rights to vote and rights to do whatever they want. The impact was great. Many women now have free rights. probably seeing the first women for president.

  27. Ariana- Definitley Ruby Bridges, because she had the courage to do what most african americans wouldnt or couldnt do. I think her going to the white school showed that women can make a difference as well as men. THe title IX is very important because women have more respect and eqality as well. I think it would be super cool to see the first womens president!!

  28. Peter- A woman in history who really stands out to me is Abigail Adams. She was an awesome first lady and was a total beast in the White House. Title IX is very cool and I think it's horrendous that women had less rights in the first place. I think in a few years there will be a woman on Mars.

  29. Brooke- I think that Rosa Parks and Mother Theresa made the biggest impacts. Rosa wouldn't give up her seat on the bus, and Mother Theresa is such a good role model and has helped so many people! I think that we will live to see a woman president. The IX thing is really cool, and I am really glad we have it now!
Women and men should be treated as equals
