Names

How important is your name?  Where did it come from?  What does it say about you?  Would it be hard to believe your life course may be set by your family surname or by the first decision made for you when you were born?  Research has shown based on your name, you may be predisposed to choose a certain profession.

Our names are held sacred.  Being a person with an alternative spelling for my first name, I am hyper-sensitive to people pronouncing and spelling it correctly.  Additionally, I am overcome with embarrassment if I mispronounce or misspell anyone’s name.  It is something we own and something we are proud of.  It is the first thing we are given and it stays with us wherever we go.

Your name can have a significant impact on those you meet even before you open your mouth.  Most often unfairly, you are judged by your name.  Researchers have polled employers on their impressions of potential candidates based solely on their name.  The name “John” for instance, creates the impression of someone who is wholesome and dependable.

In addition to creating an immediate impression, your name may also indicate your future career choice.  A Wall Street Journal article from June 21, 2011 cites a controversial study conducted by State University of New York in Buffalo which claims people are more likely to choose a profession with names that are similar the their own.  While this may seem preposterous, it is hard to argue with:

Dr. Douglas Hart – cardiologist
Sue Yoo – lawyer
Cory Greathouse – realtor
Patricia Boguslawski – lawyer
Dr. Payne – orthodontist

Even if your name does not have to do with your profession, it may provide you advantages in other ways.  Simply ask Mr. Will Wynn, winner of the Austin, TX mayoral campaign from 2003 through 2009 if you would like additional evidence.

Where did you get your name?   Based on your name, what would be your ideal profession?  Regardless of name, what do you want to do professionally in the future?

  1. JACK- ANOTHER HISTORIC DAY, #1 ON THE BLOG POST. WHAT UP DOC? (HAHA YEAH) I HONESTLY HAVE NO IDEA WHERE I GOT MY NAME BECAUSE NO ONE IN MY FAMILY WAS EVER NAMED JACK. MY REAL NAME IS JOHN WHICH IS MY DAD'S NAME SO MAYBE THEY JUST CAME UP WITH JACK AFTER THAT I DON'T KNOW. BASED ON MY NAME, I THINK I SHOULD BE A NINJA BECAUSE MY BROTHER (JACKY CHAN) WAS AN AMAZING NINJA SO I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE HIM. EVEN IF MY NAME WASN'T JACK I WOULD STILL WANT TO BE A NINJA OR A SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER NAMED MR. GRANT CHAN.

  2. Luke- Jack (HAHA NO). All i know about my name is that i got it because it is from one of the four names of the people that wrote the gospel, but besides that i have no idea. I think that im am going to stick with what my dad has inspired me to do which is be a velociraptor ( this is a cool dino) or be an orthopedic sports medicine doctor. And a sports medicine doctor is what i want to be when i grow up.

  3. Kaed- I have no clue to what my name represents in my family, and my family has never had a person named kaed, so i feel kinda left out ;), but i love my name because it is different than all of the other names and i love how it is spelled kaed instead of kade because kade is more popular. I think the profession that the word "kaed" is probably to be superman, but.. thats not going to work out.. soooo i want to be in the military and i want to fight for our country!

  4. Madison- My name was originally supposed to be Olivia, but my dad decided that he didn't like that name anymore. I know that Madison was pretty popular when I was born, so my mom just made my middle name Olivia. Apparently my name means daughter of Matthew, or it's a mighty warrior. I guess if I followed my name, I could be someone in the army? I want to be an Equine Veterinarian.

  21. Atticus-My name actually came from a book called "To Kill a Mockingbird". My character is the dad and is a lawyer but I really don't want to be a lawyer so I think I will just stick to a mechanical engineer. I also could be a rose cutter but then again that sounds really boring.

  22. josu- i got my name because my parents wanted a Basque name that could also be said in English. Based on my name i guess i would be a good lawyer because i can jo-SUE ya. I could be a cage fighter because my last name is so intimidating, Bieter or BEAT-ER. i am not really sure on what i am going to do with my life but whatever it is it will have something to do with math or the last six years were a waste of time.

  23. Ariana-I think that my parents got my name from a Basque baby book or something like that. It means beautiful melody or most holy one. I guess that means that I should be a nun or something like that, but Id rather be a cop or a doctor or something.

  24. Peter- My parents got my name by travelling up the tallest mountain in Tibet to meet with a wise monk who told them to name me after my great-uncle. It means 'rock.' I think that is a call from God telling me to be a rock. Unfortunately, being a rock doesn't pay well, so I'd rather be a space cadet.
