May Day 2012

I typically refrain from giving my opinion about the topics I write about.  I would rather read what you think than have my thoughts and opinions shape your ideas.  While I still hope for that, after reading about some of the lunacy of May 1, 2012, I can no longer hold my tongue.

On May 1st across the country May Day protests, some tied to the Occupy Wall Street protests, declared this a day to up the public protests against the 1% of the population controlling the wealth of this country.  Great.  It is each person’s choice to stand up for what they believe in and question our society and government in the face of anything which may infringe on our rights and our liberty.  That being said, this constant protest has reached the point of absurdity in many places and with many people.  They have taken this idea of equality and fairness and turned it into a ridiculous rant against the wealthy.  Many have chosen to make their protests violent, disruptive, and chaotic.

If you read the papers or search the internet you will find multiple stories concerning arrests, disruptive protests, and other gathering coordinated by the Occupy Whatever City groups.  What fascinates and irritates me is, “What do they want?”  They are concerned about the 1% of the population controlling the political and economic systems of our country.  If this is there problem, what is their solution?

Regardless, I am not one of the 1%.  But I do not believe or plan on giving any one group, wealthy or not, the power to decide anything about my life, liberty or my pursuit of happiness.  This country was built on the beliefs of valuing and respecting each individual.  I know this because I can vote.  I know this because I get to choose my profession.  I can be whatever I want to be and so can my children.  They are not held down or limited based on their economic status.

The United States of America is the greatest country in the world.  For hundreds of years we have been evolving into what we are, but our foundation is still in line with our founding fathers.  That does not mean we do not have problems.  We do.  Giant problems that need to be resolved.  But the idea of redistributing wealth goes against everything our country was based on.  You can do anything you want to if you are willing to work hard and dedicate yourself to your goals.  That to me is the bigger problem in our country. We have lost our will to work hard.  We want things to be given to us and everything to be fair.  All I know is that the things I really have had to work hard for or continue to work hard with are the most precious things in my life.  The hard work is what makes it all worth it.

I am impressed with some of the protestors.  I think they have valid concerns and would like real change.  Unfortunately it is the knuckle head antics that are getting the press.

What in your life have you had to work hard for?  What challenges did you face when trying to achieve your goals?  How did you overcome the obstacles?

  2. Peter- Yes, I'm second! My life is forever changed with this great achievement. In life, I work hard for my education, kind of. All I have to do is go to school, but I guess I'm working decently hard. I haven't faced many challenges yet, but I know I will encounter them as I continue with my education. To overcome any obstacles, I personally believe that one must try really hard and not care about what others think.

  3. Brooke- I have to work hard for cheerleading! My goal is to be on a level 5 team and be able to go to world's. An obstacle is sometimes when i have cheer practice for 3 and a half hours until 9:00 and I have to stay up really late to do homework and stuff then I'm really tired at school. Sometimes my parents think it would be better if i spent more time on school and less on cheer. I have learned to manage time better which has helped me get more sleep. Sometimes all the practice is hard and you just want to give up. I hav to just stick to it and always put in 110% effort.

  4. Atticus- The things that I work hardest for is probaly skiing and for school. School of course comes first but still skiing is awesome and it is probaly my favorite thing to do. The biggest obstacle that I face when skiing is trying to have as much fun as I can and trying to do somthing that I have never done before. I overcome these obstacles by doing the obvious...having fun and trying things I have never done before. Sometimes it hurts but when things get going rough is when you have to do that thing over and over some more.

  5. Danielle- I've really had to work hard to run. I first started getting into running in 6th grade I realized it was what i wanted to do. I decided i wanted to be a distance runner. It was harder than i thought, but I started to have fun and enjoy it! It wasnt always easy I would get hurt and recover and it would get a little tricky to get back in shape but i kept running and soon i got my best mile times. There is a great feeling when cross ther finish line, victory. If u believe u can do well and win, u can. Well most of the time I don't win but I do feel victory ever time!

  6. Angie- I have to work hard for good grades. There are a lot of challenges because there are so many distractions around us sometimes it's hard to focus on school. I also work hard in volleyball. I want to try to accomplish goals that I set. You have to overcome all these obstacles by really trying to focus on the goals you want to reach. You have to practice and work harder. Always work 110%!

  8. Luke- I have work extremely had too start on my soccer team and in school i try my best. It is very hard work to do those things. I run for 45 minutes a day because i want to be able to run a 5 minute 15 second mile by the end of the summer. I have also tried to work on my upper body strength because in soccer i use to get pushed off the ball. I think that it is just heart, courage, and effort to make sure that I will not be pushed off the ball.

  9. Madison- I work hard to be able to continue to go to horse shows. If I get bad grades, I can't go to horse shows. So I guess this also means I work hard to maintain good grades. I always have to get all of my homework and do it on the way to wherever we are going. I also work extremely hard when I'm riding my horses. At competitions all of the riders are really competitive. One little mistake in any of the phases can cost you your placing. I ride 6 days a week trying to perfect my riding skills.

  10. Nolen- Yeah School I kind of just go with the flow so here I come 99%. But I do know what it takes to not be a part of that 99% its ones will to carry the team and not let any obstacle come in between, it’s a desire that you must achieve to go ahead and get some of that green. ssssssssssssssssssssssssssss Marshawn Lynch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Sophia-I work really hard in school, because education is really important. I want to go to Princeton, and obviously that takes a LOT of work, but I have the motivation and determination to succeed. Also, I would like to be a doctor, and that obviously involves a lot of school. It's hard to do all your homework while doing your ABSOLUTE best, because sometimes you are tired, or want to hang out with friends. I just think about how it's going to pay off if I study for even 10 minutes a day.

  12. Ally- I work hard to get better and better at soccer and I also work hard in school. School can be really hard to focus on because there are things we would much rather be doing. If I want to do well in school, I'm going to have to try as hard as I can to focus no matter what obstacles get in the way.

  13. Isabelle- I try to do my best in everthing I do. Especially in soccer and scool, I try really hard. They are both very important to me and help me in many ways. As long as I continue to work hard in these areas I will continue to benefit from them. The challenges are focusing, staying unified as a team, controlling your emotions, and doing the best you can every single time. All you have to do is have faith in yourself and the rest will follow. You can achieve anything when you have passion and confidence.

  14. Cooper- I've had to work hard in sports because im not the biggest person and I've had to work hard in school. In sports I've had to work harder than others to achieve my goal, in school I've had to study and focus harder than I've ever had to achieve my goals. In sports I've overcome the obstacles by working harder than anyone that's on my team, In math I had a Tudor to help me with the math I didn't understand and spent time after school learning the concepts i needed clarification.

  16. The hardest job i ever did was volunteering at St. Vicents De Paul. They had me move a lot of stuff on some occasions. But at least i'm helping some people that work there. The challenges i faced was a lot in football. And sometimes we got no water break if we didn't do a thing right over and over again. Until we work as a team then we get our water break.

  17. Marya- I work hard in school and getting one direction to notice me. I face challenging tests and stuff i sometimes don't understand. I can overcome these obstacles by studying and asking questions. it's also very hard getting 3 British, 1 Pakistan/British , and 1 Irish boy to notice you. Especially when they are in the most popular boy band in the world right now. I guess i could just try harder and get Gabby, kendall, and halle to help me.

  22. Ariana-I try really hard to get good grades in school. School is something that everyone has to go through and it helps you in the future so I think everyone should try hard when it comes to school. A challenge would be that i forget EVERYTHING but writing stuff down helps! unless i forget to look at what i wrote down....!

  23. Kendall- I work really hard for a lot of things. MOstly school. I try to keep my grades up. School is where i am at everyday so its my biggest priority.I face challenges from not being able to have enough time to get things done, or maybe i am just a big procrastinator. I try just to stay very organized with things in school. I really try hard to get justin bieber to be my boyfriend as i do with trying to get one direction to come to boise. Some things are so tough right marya...haha

  25. RYAN-I HAVE TO WORK REALLY HARD BECAUSE IM YOUNG ENOUGH TO BE IN THE SEVENTH GRADE AND I HAVE USUALLY PLAYED UP A FULL AGE ABOVE ME MAYBE SOMETIMES TWO AGES. IT IS ALOT OF FUN TO CHALLANGE YOURSELF THOUGH. sOME CHALLANGES THAT I CAME ACROSS WAS EVERYONE IS BIGGER THAN I AM AND ALSO THE BRAGGING RIGHTS.I OVER CAME THESE BY PLAYING HARDER AND WORKING HARDER SO THAT I COULD PLAY ON THEIR LEVEL

  26. Zach- My ability to draw well isn't all natural awesomeness, i have worked hard for many years to become as good as i am today, and i am still improving. My musical talents are not natural at all either, and the only thing stopping me from becoming the greatest person in the world, or at least its ruler, is my own lazyness.

  27. Kaed- I am trying to work as hard as i can in basketball, and also getting back in shape, because of when i broke my foot, that sucked terribly and lost my shape. :( Age doesnt matter to me even though i am one of the youngest, all that matters is how you see yourself as a player, and how hard you play in whatever you do. Also another thing that I am wanting to improve is my laziness, Im not all that lazy, but i need to make it so when the moment comes, i dont mess it up because i am being lazy about it. Also when i go into military school i cant be lazy for one second.

  28. Abby- I try to work hard in everthing I do. The thing I work the hardest at is school. I work hard in school because I know it is really important to have a great education. An obstacle I face in school is a super hard test I have to study hours for or a ton of homework. I get threw these obstacles by working hard and never giving up.

  29. Josu-You have to work hard in everything you do. if not then you are wasting your time. It is better to work hard for something and not reach it than to not even try at all. I have to work hard in school. My goal was to get a 4.0 Obstacles include big tests or projects, and missing blog assignments. To overcome these obstacles you have to spend time studying and dont wait till the last second to do things. I am overcomming not having my blog done by finishing it right now.
