Veteran's Day

November 11 is Veteran’s Day in the United States.  It is a day to remember the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting the American way of life.  Through the years these individuals have put their safety and well-being in jeopardy in the name of freedom, liberty, and justice.  We owe all former and current members of our armed services a great deal of gratitude.

Whether or not you agree with the involvement of our military around the world, the support of our troops is necessary.  It is not the soldier who decides where to go, they take orders.  They go where they are needed and where they are asked to go.  It is a difficult life.  In addition to risking their life, they are often separated from their families for months on end.  They give up the comforts of Saturday afternoon football games, microwave popcorn, and a nice fireplace in exchange for tents in the middle of the desert.

It is fitting we dedicate a day during the year to remember those brave men and women who truly understand what it means to be called to duty.

What are your thoughts on Veteran’s Day?  What ways can you personally honor our veterans and current military members?  What do you think life would be like in the armed services today?

  1. Peter- I think Veteran's day is a good idea because the people that fight for us deserve recognition. Both my parents are veterans. To personally honor veterans we can hang a flag on our house and attend a veteran memorial service at a cemetery or church. To honor current military members we can write letters to them. If we didn't have armed services, we wouldn't be safe and would be overtaken by terrorists. We would live in fear.
    *Happy Veteran's Day!*

  2. Luke- I think it is a very nice thing to celebrate Veteran's Day. THey definitely deserve to have at least one day of the year dedicated to those people that die for our country. We can send care packages with food and other good items. I think it would be an honor to work for the military but, it would be extremely scary and im am not sure im i could rise to the call of duty.

    Thank you Veterans!

  3. Ann- I totally agree with he idea of veterans day, it nice to honor our soldiers for a day. We can honor our veterans by going to the memorials around town and and respecting them, we can also honor soldiers by if you see one in uniform say thank you for fighting for our country and keeping us safe. Life in the armed forces would be hard i think, living under harsh conditions and gunfire going off everyday, there are few people who have the courage to do what the members of armed forces do everyday during battle.

  4. Madison-I agree that the people that have been, or are, in our army deserve recognition. Personally we can post things on social sites on the web such as Facebook or Twitter. I know people that are going to the army in February, but I will not end up there. They are called to help our country in that way, but I think I am called to help people in a different way.

  5. Angie- We definitely need to honor our veterans. They risk their own lives to fight for their country. I'm glad that there's a holiday for us to celebrate it and honor them. We can visit veteran homes and talk to them and thank them. They enjoy people's company and knowing that people appreciate them. There was a story where a robber was breaking into someone's house. They were about to kill them but they saw in the person's wallet that they were a veteran so they put all the stuff back and left. I thought that was a really funny story. I couldn't imagine what life is like in the armed forces. They have to wake up early and train and they're away from their families a lot. It's really sad. Life is probably really tiring and hard on them.

  6. Sophia-I think Veteran's Day is a great thing. It honors people who serve our country, something that I would be terrified to do. To honor soldiers, we can hang flags, be thankful and never take the soldiers for granted, and we can pray for them that they come back alive and healthy. I can't even imagine being in the armed forced. I take for granted my warm bed, my family, and all the things that give me comfort. It would definitely be hard not having all the things I'm used to. Some things wouldn't be as hard as others though and I guess if I were in the armed forces I would just pretend it was a really hard Lent. I would be so scared though and I would miss all the people that I have gotten used to seeing almost everyday.

  7. Halle-I think that it is great that we have a day dedicated to our soldiers. We should be very grateful for what they have done for us and our country. Everyday they risk our lives just to protect us. What i can do personally is thank the people I know for protecting me and our country. Some people don't realize how important our military is and how sometimes their acts may go on unnoticed. But it means a lot to them when you thank them. And to let them know you really are thankful for what they have done. Life without armed forces woulld be terrifying. Nothing would be there to protect us and our country would be in shambles, falling apart. That's why I am glad we have people willing to risk their lives to protect us.

  8. Nerea- I am very glad we have a day dedicated to our veterans because most of the time we forget to thank them so this day gives us an opportunity to be appreciate of our soldiers. One way i can show my thanks towards them is go talk to them for an hour or so or wrtie to them.

  9. Abby- I love that we have a day dedicated to the men and women who fight for us. We sometimes forget to be thankful for solders even though they risk their lives for our country. To let veterans know we are grateful for their services we can call friends and relatives who were in the army and thank them for serving our country. America would not be here today without our great armed forces. I know I would never be brave enough to go through what they have gone though.

  10. josu- Veterans day is a good idea because many time the military don't get the appreciation that they deserve. Most of the time our military personnel don't get noticed. Veterans day is a great way to show your thanks. To show our appreciation we could have a moment of silence for the people who are in the military and those who lost their lives. i think that life in the military would be much tougher than it was over the past centuries. I dont think that i could be in the military.

  11. Ariana- I love that we have a day dedicated to the people who have fought for our freedom in America. I think that to show our appreciation for these people we should call the people we know who are or were fighting for us is by thanking those who were or are, putting a flag in your yard, and visiting a grave of someone who was a veteran. I can't imagine how harsh the conditions in the army would be today for someone in the army. They are probably always on a tight schedule, are constantly taking orders, and they have more courage and strength than most any other Americans. They probably are very alert, and they always have the feeling that they could die any second. It would be a tough thing to do, and that's why I think veterans day is something that is neccesary fir America today. It helps us realize how amazing what they do really is, and how much respect they deserve.

  12. Isabelle- I think it's great that we have a day dedicated to our service men and women. It's important that we recognize them because they are risking their lives for people they don't even know. We can hang American flags on the front of houses,we can pray for these people, and we can comfort them by sending letters to them (even if we don't know them personally.) I'm sure they would love to hear comforting words from Americans, especially those who don't have families and friends. Life would be extremely hard. The drills, commands, and traveling to foreign places would take a toll on you after awhile. It's amazing that they can fight through it and honor their country!

  13. Cooper- I think veterans day is a important day in our country because they are the people who have fought for our country and have fought for our beliefs and freedoms and belief that all people are treated equal. Send them letters, give jobs to veterans, help support the families that have lost someone in war. I think its the hardest job you'll ever do because your putting your life on the line and you don't know if you'll ever see your family again. GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS!

  14. Ally- I think it's great that we have a day dedicated to Veterans. We definitely need to recognize these men and women because they've fought so hard for us. Ways that I can honor our Veterans is by praying for them. I'm sure they would appreciate it if we all sent them letters telling them that they are in our prayers. Being in the armed services has got to be one of the hardest jobs ever. Just the thought that they may die at any time must be scary. I guess just knowing that they are doing it for everyone in their country keeps their heads high and keeps them motivated.

  15. Danielle- I think its awesome that we have a day dedicated for Veterans. They pretty much risk there lives for us and our country and we should really be grateful that we have them. We can honor them by putting a flag in our yard or sending care packages and like Ally said, pray for them extra. Being in the armed service is probably very difficult. It is probably very scary to think that you might die and not see your family again. But I''m sure they stay very positive a brave! Thank u Veterans!! We wouldn't be here without u!

  16. Nolen- I think that Veterans day is very important and always should be very important in out world. Veterans day is a day that we remember all the people that are dead or that are currently serving in the military. We should do this more then just once a year but its the way it is. There is always more we can do for them but it is always nice of us to give them cards or donate stuff to them. Veterans day is just a very important day for me and many others.

  17. RYAN- I THINK VETERANS DAY IS THE BEST DAY IN THE WORLD(BESIDES MY BIRTHDAY AND CHRISTMAS)BECAUSE YOUR THANKING PEOPLE FOR RISKING THEIR LIFE FOR OUR FREEDOM AND HAPPINESS. WHAT I USUALLY DO WHEN I THINK ABOUT OUR SOLDIERS CURRENTLY AND OUR VETERANS I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER TO KEEP THEM SAFE AND I PRAY FOR THE YOUNG VETERANS THAT HAVE COME BACK FROM WAR AT THE AGE OF THIRTY AND THEY HAVE GONE CRAZY BECAUSE OF THE BLAST AND GUN FIRE AND THEY MAY NEVER RECOVER. I THINK LIFE WOULDN'T BE AS MISERABLE AS IT WAS BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN SOME OF OUR VETERANS SERVED BUT IT WOULD BE HECTIC BECAUSE WHEN SOMEBODY DOES FIRE AT US IT MEANS WAR.

  18. gabby- i think that veterans day is a great day, because the men and women that serve in the armed forces deserve to be thanked. they risk their lives for the safety of our country. these people are so brave and deserve our respect. i think that veterans day should be more than one day a year. one way to personally thank veterans is if you see them thank them. another way is to make cards and send them to a veterans home. i think that all the people that have served for america should constantly be in our prayers. i think it would be very hard be in the military. the being away from family and friends would be hard to do. i think that we should have school on veterans day.

  19. Phillip - I think Veteran’s Day is a wonderful day. The veterans deserve it. We can personally honor our veterans and current military by putting up a flag on Veteran’s day. We could also talk to and comfort the veterans. I think life in the armed services would be an amazing honor, but I wouldn’t do it. I just couldn’t deal with staying away from my family all that time and having to see so many deaths each day.

  20. kaed- i personally love veterans day because my great granddad was part of the military, also i would like to be in the military to serve this country because i would want to protect this country as much as i can. But hardest thing would be leaving family and going to duty(depending on if you are in the war or not)

  21. Marcos- Veterans Day is a day to remember the people that are in the military before and now. Vrterans have a speacial day to be remembered for there bravery and there duty, they did during the military. My brother that is in he military right now, and I thanked him for the great thing he is doing right now.We can personally honor them by remembering the things thry did for us. Go to a veterans home and thank the people that were in the military. And give maybe thank you cards to the people that are in the military right now. The life in the military had to be survival. They have to be prepared and alert for any ambush or attacks on them. Go for days without a shower, eat and drink less than usual. And other tough things that was hard for them. When it is all over, they will say to themselves that, all the torture they gone through was worth it. And know that they are soldiers that protected this country.

  22. JACK- I THINK THAT VETERANS DAY IS UP THERE ON THE LIST OF MOST IMPORTANT U.S. HOLIDAYS. IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO HONOR THE PEOPLE THAT RISKED THEIR LIVES AND ARE RISKING THEIR LIVES TO KEEP US SAFE. WE CAN DO THIS BY CONTINUOUSLY PRAYING FOR THEM, AND PUT THEM IN GOD'S HANDS TO KEEP THEM SAFE. I THINK THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A MOMENT OF SILENCE ALSO ON VETERANS DAY SO THAT WE REMEMBER THE PEOPLE WHO PASSED IN THE WAR.

  23. Marya- I think that Veteran's day is really special. Our troops deserve to be thanked and have one special day dedicated to them. It doesn't matter if they are dead or alive, we still thank them and honor them. We can pray for them or send them care packages. We can visit the veterans home and give cards or just thank them. I am very thankful that they are risking their lives for us. God bless our soldiers!

  25. Atticus- I think that vetrans day is a great thing because they need apretiation for all that they have done for this countrey. I have strong felings for this type of thing because my brother is in the millitary so I think that it is good to thank him for all he has done. I can honor them by pledging to the flag donating money and much more. I think and know that life in the armed fources is heard and you have to work heard to keep your place. He says he does feel good about it because he is serving his countrey and the people in it.

  26. Zach-veterans day not only honors them but it inspires people to serve their country. Joining the millitay is probably the best way to honor them because it shows that they inspire us to protect and serve. I know what life in the millatary is like because my father, uncle, grand-father, great grand-father, and other ancestors have been in the millitary so i have first hand experience. The Armed Forces makes but you move around alot, even to germany; but you get used to and make as many friends as possible before leaving.

  27. Brooke~ I think veterans day is a great way to honor our veterans and im really glad we have it. We could honor them by actually thanking them if we see someone in uniform or we could put an american flag in our yard, make cards for them or something. If i was in the military, I would be really scared. they are so brave, and i am so thankful for our troops.
